You can go exploring, etc, before you get the Deflector. Just don't place anything you want to keep above ground.

You can always cheat the system with backup programs, but I HIGHLY recommend actually playing it on Hardcore and not relying on backup-scumming. After you understand some of the mechanics and what you need to do on the first day to accelerate your underground survival it's not that hard to get...

@Iskandar Bug Report. FTB finally updated to Beta 0.1.0 today. After I did the update, the Tubes mod was removed from the pack. I checked the changelog, didn't see a mention of this mod being removed. I also did a fresh install and it seems to just not be included in the package any longer.
