What is the best way to back up saves (I'm using a Mac)

I also made 2 chunkloaders in the last week and my game has crashed twice and doesn't show in menu. Fixed first with level.dat. Haven't tried since the 2nd crash. Backed up save just prior to second crash.

I was killing zombies and collecting Ars Magica liquid when my screen pixelated black spots and crashed. Just tried to play again and my map is all gone. Tried the above fix and it didn't work.

Having same issue on a Mac trying to download the Direwolf20 1.6.4 modpack. Tried twice. Doesn't make it even halfway through. Don't have the report, but the last lines are red and have to do with Java.
