What I ended up doing was using dev version of MultiMC and downloading the pack I wanted to play on that. Worked fine. No clue what is up with the launcher :(

Know this may be necromancy, but any chance of adding Astral Sorcery? Really think that can use a teaching quest chain.

I had this bad, then took some random advise and disabled Journal map and enabled Opis instead and my lag went away. No clue if this is a one off thing, but worth a try.

With FTB Evolved coming this week, I would not hold my breath for 1.8 packs. There is a lot of life left in 1.7.10. If I am correct though, wasn't there some big change in 1.9 that would reduce lag greatly? Particles not being entities or something?

Magical Wood Sword is great. Use magical wood for all sword parts, diamond to use a flux capacitor to recharge then 9 levels of quartz. Replace some of those layers with beheading to get a beheading x sword.
