I hadn't noticed this in 1.6.4, but when trying out my alpha-infdev version of ShneekeyCraft for 1.7.10, I noticed a whole ton of lag as chunks generate. This was in vanilla before adding mods.

Is this now a thing in 1.7? Is there a way to mitigate it?

I've now got OBS for Linux, and it can record and even stream to twitch.tv. I've got a slight desync between video and game audio (about a half second) which I'm still trying to resolve, but it is entirely likely that you might see me streaming some development of ShneekeyCraft 1.3-infdev for 1.7.10 at some point.

Where else?
i dunno, it seems fine to me, only time i catch up to the loaded chunks edge is creative flying for a minite or so.

This happens to me as well. I've tried without mods, it's the same thing. My console is full of strings like

Clientside chunk ticking took 243ms

I got this lag when exploring new chunks. Generated chunks are fine.
I tested it both on Mac and PC using Bevo's pack and a custom modpack made by me.

I'm playing with bevo's pack and I notice it as well. Could it just be a forge thing? Considering they just got SMP working the other day, it's possible another bug or twenty are lurking.

I've definitely gotten the Chunk Ticking thing in the log before, but only when I was playing the first release of Unstable. I haven't gotten it since then.

Since it was happening on Vanilla, I doubt this is a Forge thing. But apparently it is a 1.7 thing.

I'm getting it too, but once it settles I'm getting a lot better fps than I did in 1.6.

On vanilla is not that bad for me, I have to fly in creative to get it. With Forge is way worse, even with no other mods loaded. It was even worse on previous versions though, after ten minutes of exploration on Unstable 1.0.3 I wasn't able to move.

Fingers are pointing at Forestry's Apatite retrogen as causing it as it coincides with server console messages and chunk gen spikes.

I've noticed it too, and I'm also getting the chunk ticking message spam as well. I'm trying to create my own pack and I've been disabling things one-by-one trying to figure out what was causing it. Signs were pointing towards Roguelike Dungeons, but disabling it didn't completely solve the issue (it did get much better, however). I really do want to keep it in there, though.

It's very frustrating because my computer, while not a beast, is still definitely not a chump. I was able to keep frame rates above 100 in my 1.6.4 custom pack with 110 mods in it.

It's an AMD FX-6100 3.3 GHz (6 cores) running Arch Linux 64-bit, with 8 Gb of RAM, a GeForce GTX 560 Ti, and using a RAID 0 drive setup.

I don't have a great gpu or a beast machine but I can get ~30 fps with Resonant Rise with only 2-3 mods removed. Aside from the HARSH terrain/chunk loading, I'm getting ~50-60 fps in 1.7.10. Its surprising because that's just about what I get in vanilla.

Is anyone in 1.7.10 getting spammed with chunk ticking error messages? I'm not just getting spammed, but I'm lagging a LOT now.

I'm still trying to put my 1.7.10 pack together, so I haven't played it too heavily yet to see just how bad it gets.

But if it gets too much worse than it already is, I feel like I might end up playing 1.6.4 until modded 1.8 is a thing...

Only on chunk generation, especially at the start on a new world. Once all generated, settles down a lot, and FPS is quite high (for modded minecraft). My personal pack is at 80 ish mods so far, and getting 60FPS once the world has generated.
Strangely, when exploring, I can get fast chunk generation and high FPS, but then it'll bomb out randomly and have to wait for it again.

I must admit that chunk generation was bad. Its the same in my custom instance, Bevo's & SolitaryCraft on the ATLauncher, and FTB Unstable. But thing would stabilize and my fps would ho back to my vanilla 45-50 fps. Once I added the CoFH mod family, things got significantly worse. They're all early builds so I'm not complaining but it is a concern.

It's really bad in the new snapshots (pre-1.8). Yeah the chunks load really quickly... but that's when they load at all.

I would like to add some potentially useful links to this thread. I am experiencing excessive hangs in my 1.7.10 test pack with or without world-gen mods, and my client console is filled with "Clientside chunk ticking took X ms". I should note that this occurs both in single player and while connected to my test server on a separate computer. My own computer has an i5 2500k with a Geforce 780 and 16 GB of RAM, 4 of which is allocated to Minecraft.

The possible bug at Mojang's bug reports page
Possibly related, at minecraftforge forums

I am not certain, but I believe it is a vanilla 1.7.10 bug which has been resolved in snapshot 14w29a. Unless we're slated to get a 1.7.11 release, we may be stuck with this one until 1.8.
