Unfortunately 1.5.2 is easily the most problematic and "special" of any version. Could you give some details about your setup? OSX or Win32? Does the game load at all? Vanilla, or only 3 mods loads (i.e. MCP, FML and Forge) Does the FML progress dialog come up during launch?

I'd argue it is the best use for your first two iron. Even better, since you probably have a ferrous ingot at that point, make them invar shears which last longer. Note that sheared leaves still drop saplings at the vanilla rate. That'll net you enough dirt to get a decent farm going.

I find lilypads over the water blocks look better than covers. Golems walk across them just fine.

Two other (faster) ways: Water *bottle* doesn't use up the water source block, you can then use a squeezer to extract a full bucket from the bottle. Now you've got two. Glacial Precipitator can convert your initial bucket into 8 snowballs.
