The turtle would have to make 7 moves per 2 melons harvested because of all the turning since you can only break blocks forward, up, and down. The other method is 4 moves per 2 melons and you could also factor in a quicker return time as the posted method ends against the starting wall.

Don't get into it because of that. The effects are very rare and you can't really cause them on purpose. Most of the flux get's cleaned up by sending out wisps. What is worth it though are my personal favourites the boots of the traveler, golems, and the axe of the stream.

You can get some potion affects as well, both good and bad. Nausea, blindness, weakness, haste and regen are the ones I've had happen to me so far.

That is mostly likely a flux effect from Thaumcraft. If you've released nature based elements into the local aura one of the random effects for cleaning it is to act like bonemeal on grass instead of just creating a wisp.
