Unsupported major.minor Version 51 but I have Java 1.7 installed?

Details of the issue I've spent the last hour on my mac computer, getting the java to show up in terminal when I type "java -version". I finally got it to display 1.7, but I'm still getting the same error message in my Minecraft Launcher window! I've heard the "51"version error is due to an outdated java version, but I've also heard that Java 1.8 doesn't work on FTB. So 1.7 seemed to be the right one..???
