So I finally got myself a new machine!

Core i7 4GHz, 16GB DDR3, GTX970 and a 27" monitor to crown all its glory.

Minecraft took a backseat lately due to Elite Dangerous, but getting the itch again lately, so given my new specs, I'm thinking of throwing in a heavy'ish texture pack in there.

Any suggestions for what pack and what res I should be aiming for? Currently playing DW20 1.7 with a few extra mods thrown in.

I love Soartex having seen it in @rhn's builds.
However, I must also vote for Faithful, which is amazing in its ability to improve the clarity of things but make you forget you are using a texture pack at all.
And, vonDoomCraft for the humor value. My kids love this one.

My all-time favourite is John Smith - in my opinion this is how vanilla should look like, medieval but not too dark. However, Soartex looks better with modern builds and machines.

Is the shaders thing + optifine compatible with 1.7? I knew optifine broke everything to hell back in 1.6.

To be technical it was Forge that broke compatibility with Optifine. Forge chose to change how certain things were done to bring it in line with the MC EULA and terms of use/whatever. Optifine have not bothered to change it(would be a complete rewrite I guess) and therefore they will probably forever be incompatible as far as I understand it.

Sphax has always been my favorite, and it's not even close.

However, my experience hasn't been great with texture packs and FTB. There's so many items, and so many different mods, what usually happens is that some blocks remain 8-bit and other will be 128-bit (if you have the computing power to run a 128x texture pack). And since that kinda thing really bothers me, I've been running straight vanilla textures for a while now.

Back in FTB Ultimate days, there was a Sphax resource pack that re-did every block in the game. Those were the great days of Minecraft. Lately I've only been playing GregTech modpacks, and outside of a guy named Pyrolusite I don't think anyone has put together a texture pack for GT. It was fun while it lasted back in Ultimate, having a great modpack AND a great texture pack. We might never see such a thing again, ever.

I also upgraded my PC recently, and texture packs were on my list of things to find. As @rhn has shown, Soartex is beautiful - I still dream of living in his sandstone "starter hut". That said, when I played around with it for a while, it just didn't jive with my style.

After playing around with 4-5 different packs, I settled on John Smith. Maybe its because the build I'm making right now is pretty low tech (late steam age of FTB Resurrection) and a bit more magical (trying Thaumcraft heavy approach).

My best advuce is just try as many as you need until that Aha! moment. Good luck.

I agree to this completely. Soartex is IMO a very realistic based graphical update that stays relatively true to vanilla MC. It is very suited for realistic, modern and scifi based builds. But if you prefer medieval, magical builds or possible a more cartoon like feel then it is probably not the best choice.

I tried Soartex, and I'm not sure.

Don't get me wrong .. is IS beautiful, but I'm noticing some things look weird. Animal animation for example is feeling very choppy to me.

There's a great Sphax RP for GT however it needs to be the updated GT as he changed a ton of things (texturewise).

Gregtech_1.7.10-5.07.06 or newer has the great Sphax RP, Resurrection is using gregtech_1.7.10-5.06.06 so yeah too old.
