When someone mentions tech mods, they usually are thinking of BC, IC2, RP2, Forestry, etc. Almost every mod pack using tech mods includes the "big four" as I like to call them (this being Builcraft, Industrialcraft, Redpower and Forestry) when almost all of the features found in those mods can also be found in other mods. I've decided to challenge myself and put together a set of mods for general modded Minecraft play, without including the mods listed in the title.

This project would not be at all possible back in Beta 1.8 when I started playing with mods, but currently there are so many mods to find and choose from that this project is perfectly possible. I don't plan on making a complete mod pack, but I might if permissions end up being fairly easy, and there is enough demand.

Listed here are the major features of the 7 mods I am banning from this project:

  • Transport pipes
  • Automatic building
  • Automatic clearing
  • Electrical systems
  • Automatic mining
  • "Free" furnaces
  • Automatic crafting
  • Automated collection/sorting/routing of items
  • Automated farming
  • Improved processing of resources
  • Better/more food
  • Moving entire structures of blocks
  • Improved manual farming
  • Complex genetic engineering (Bees, Trees, IC2 farming)
  • Improved crafting table
  • Marble, Basalt, cracked/mossy bricks/cobble, more woods
  • Biome-specific mechanics
  • Auto-loading/unloading of mine carts
  • Liquid transport, storage, and pumping
  • "infinite" tools (mining drill, chainsaw, Nano Saber, etc.)
  • Incredibly over-powered armor (Quantum armor)
  • Micro-blocks (functional and aesthetic)
  • Single-block logic gates
  • Improved redstone wiring
  • More ores
  • Safe methods of creating mob drops (or equivalents of these drops)
  • Extremely-powerful lighting
  • Extremely-dense storage
  • Fully-programmable computers
If I missed any major features, please let me know.
Looking at these features, I don't see very much that you can't get from other mods. The mod list I'm currently kicking around can be found below:
For replacing lost functionalities
  • Universal Electricity
  • Minefactory Reloaded
  • Immibis' Mirco Blocks
  • Immibis' InfiniTubes
  • Immibis' TubeStuff (subject to change)
  • Applied Energistics
  • ComputerCraft
  • Project Bench
  • Xie's Mod (subject to change)
  • Modular Power Suits (subject to change)
  • Iron Chests
The following functionalities are lost using these mods:
  • Moving entire structures of blocks
  • Improved manual farming
  • Complex genetic engineering (Bees, Trees, IC2 farming)
  • Marble, Basalt, cracked/mossy bricks/cobble, more woods
  • Liquid transport, storage, and pumping
  • Improved redstone wiring
  • Extremely-powerful lighting
  • Extremely-dense storage
For added fun/functionality:
  • NEI
  • Immibis' Liquid XP
  • Dungeon Pack
  • Flat Bedrock (PowerCrystals') (subject to change)
  • (one of the many craftable mob spawner mods) (subject to change)
  • Rei's Minimap (possibly Zan's instead)
  • (BicBiomeCraft, Extra Biomes XL, or Highlands mod. I haven't decided on which.)
  • Rotarycraft (VERY MUCH subject to change)
  • Little Blocks (VERY MUCH subject to change
  • Dimensional Doors
I'll throw more in as I find/think of them.
Any input would be much-appreciated.

If im reading what you want correctly (if not ignore this suggestion) you could add the universal electricity addon fluid mechanics to get liquid transport and storage.

There is also a mod called barrels mod (or something along them lines) that basically copies the functionality of factorization barrels (with its own code and what not its not just a straight rip off) so that would cover your dense storage (this can be found on minecraftforum somewhere).

For slightly better redstone mechanics (nowhere near RP2+WRCBE) there is another wireless redstone mod (also findable on minecraftforum somewhere) that would probably come in useful.

They are all the ones I can think of that could possible check something off of your list of lost functionalities.

It would be intersecting to see how you will be without those mods. Universely electricity and computercraft will be two of your most used mods to come.
P.S I don't think forestry should be considered part of the " big tech mods" since it relies on buildcraft. My opinion
