I don't even know what i'm doing wrong with this mod, but it feels so anti-progress
I set up a research table, and begin some research. The table decides to set me upon a task where I have to combine my old elements to find new elements that then work for the research note I'm currently on. The only problem is the lack of research points. If I am supposed to both figure out the puzzle within the note, and find the combination to find the elements the note needs; how am I supposed to ever get enough points in any aspect? I find myself constantly running out of aspects like fire, iron, and pretty much any of them. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
I also have the clusters of each aspect except order, and 5 bookshelves

TLDR: I don't know how to get enough research points to continue research, and it's kinda frustrating haha

You and I are in the same boat. I find it hard too. Luckily, one of the members on these forums, Succubism, has written some handy cheat sheats for Thaumcraft 4 and its addons. I have started reading through them now I am giving Thaumcraft a serious go and I recommend you do to. The main thread is stickied in the mod discussion sub forum

A Void Chest is your best friend for this mod. From my experience the RNG is absolutely terrible for certain key researches like Gold Wand Caps.

Also, are you scanning everything? After a certain point you should be able to scan almost every object you see, and machines in particular give insane amounts of aspects. I got at least 130 Metallum from scanning.

Also, put bookcases near your table and some crystal clusters :D They will fill up research points fine

Follow this guide

http://forum.feed-the-beast.com/threads/thaumcraft-4-a-quick-way-to-discover-all-aspects.33605/

I think there is possibly one spot that you need to do the next step before you do the one you are stuck on, but that could have been fixed, if I remember correctly.
Then scan every single block and item there is.

Also scan every single node you see.

Hunting for nodes to scan and recharge your wands with will be a major part of the mod.

Bibliocraft bookcases.

I just use those and throw all my extra notes in them.

Push past the nasty start
Scan everything that you can, I found it good to combine the primal aspects in every way i could, then go out and start scanning things, it kinda snowballed with aspects from there, but before i combined the primal aspects myself, I just kept on pulling "You don't have enough knowledge to understand this"

I like the way this is balanced, it's just a little hard to start off for the first time while you don't quite understand what's happening

EDIT:there's a way to make sure that you don't ever completely run dry of research points. Certain blocks near your research table confer a bonus point to an aspect, which means that if that aspect has completely run dry, it will regenerate one and only one point to it. Which blocks some people may find a spoiler, so I'll put them here
put each type of crystal cluster around your research table, as these contribute the primal aspects, which from there you can get any other aspect

its best that near your research table you have a void chest or a trash bin from extra utilities because yes we already know thaumcraft can really really be a shaky start at first especially when you actually still dont understand the mechanics of the the new research gimmick but never knew RNG would be heavily involved in research... never knew that... I know the difficulty of the research is reliant on RNG but the outcomes... really? well ok... probably it is since I actually got some research notes that were theoretically impossible to complete, but I guess early in game theres a higher chance you will always gt nitor as your first research ignis and lux are the aspects if I remember them right

I haven't actually come across any research papers I need to scrap ._.
Don't know if I'm doing something terribly wrong or right, but there's been some i needed to pause because I didn't have the component research, but I just came back to those later

Ditto for TC 4.0.5b, but TT was a different story for me. Are you using TT, Adonis0 ?

That I am, but I haven't done much of their research[DOUBLEPOST=1386032673][/DOUBLEPOST]Something that I am struggling with thaumcraft though, is finding aura nodes

I've been boating around the ocean at night looking for their tell-tale glow on the minimap, but the only ones I've found are full of water and dirt. I haven't even found enough to make goggles of revealing to make finding them easier

Anybody have some tips?

All the extras I get are from when I am looking for specific research and I get ones I don't want at that moment.

I could do them as I get them but I really don't want to. I get a lot of metal transmutations, which I will never use, so I just keep them and their them in a bookcase. I also get a lot of the tools, again, things that I will never use
All the wands cores are another.

Eventually I will do them but I see no reason to waste my time doing them until I have everything else I will
actually use done.

Until then they just sit there and once the research is done, they are useless.

For just research points, scan everything in your chests and everything you craft. TE machines are VERY abundant in research points, as are most things from dartcraft. I'd also craft a lot of cheap tools. All your wood and stone tools have good points & aspects. Finally craft vanilla items you normally wouldn't like cake and pumpkin pie.

That quote was very out of context >.>
I personally was asking for tips on how to find nodes since we were on the topic of thaumcraft

Some form of flight at night, low over low tree count biomes (plains\desert etc). Also look for silverwoods (some have pure nodes in them I've seen 0-3) the totems (spawn anywhere, have a node) and the "mountain" platforms (up high, y=90+ or thereabouts, have a node as well as a chest). Make the goggles a priority since I found a lot more nodes (even one almost in my base that I hadn't seen) once I had them.

You don't even have goggles of Revealing and you're already going out at night searching for nodes. You need to get the Goggles researched. So my tips may seem out of context, but they will help you. You basically need to complete that research and craft those goggles. Nothing else is going to help you find nodes.

I have the goggles researched, I have plenty of research points, but I can't make them as they require vis in a wand, as I can't find nodes

Edit: reading back on the original post, it was a bit ambiguous, My apologies.
Research points are fine, but I'm having trouble finding nodes to fill my wand with. It currently has water and earth vis in it, because that's all I can seem to find.

Do you know if the nodes have vis in them based upon where they're spawned?
I've managed to get water, and earth vis because those are everywhere in the ocean. So that leads me to think perhaps the mountain platform ones would have air or fire?

It seems to be influenced by the surrounding biome, not hard and fast by any means seems to me that the biome tends to fix one aspect of the node (water-ocean, desert-fire, jungle-terra and the larger single aspect nodes tend to follow the biome preference) but it is by no means certain just seems to be weighted higher, so you are more likely to get that particular aspect in a node in that biome but there will be others and it's not certain that aspect will be present. Haven't done any statistical study of it it just seems to work out that way from my flying around. I have a list of about 50 nodes waypointed for later once I have the silverwood wand\recharge pedestal\node ina jar, I have the research just haven't got it all made yet (yesterday I had no research done :D).
