Now that there's a 1.12 release of Twilight Forest, I was sorry to see it didn't make it in time to be included with the Revelations pack. This was easily one of my favorite mods from Infinity Evolved, and one of the most complete "otherworld/dimension" scenarios, unlike the Deep Dark and the Beneath which were distinctly lacking in depth or story, let alone anything beyond the most simple exploration.

Unfortunately TF still doesn't have a final boss fight at the end; hopefully they are working on that bit. https://usercontent2.hubstatic.com/12456485_f520.jpg

I feel the same about Horizons III (it’s not in that either) - it seems a shame, as it’s a great mod and, even without a final boss, when playing with progression it’s a real questy thing!

Very strongly disagree here.

Twilight Forest is currently a buggy mess, with lighting update lag that has to be experienced to be believed. And this on a 3.5 GHz proc, 1050Ti video card, and 8 GB RAM dedicated.

I'd also very strongly disagree about the need for 'bosses'. Minecraft combat, while better than it used to be, is still very much infantile, and doesn't really support boss battles outside of either 'beat on it a whole lot' which is boring, or 'gimmick/puzzle' bosses, which tend to be extremely annoying and obvious (see also: Litch).

One could argue that any boss fight, in any game, comes down to the two scenarios you presented. I agree that combat is not the best feature of Minecraft, but having a mod dedicated to presenting boss fights in interesting settings with at least semi-unique gimmicks isn't a bad idea. The idea of chaining them together in progression can occasionally be annoying, but it does add something to strive for.

Personally, getting lost in the Twilight Forest (back in 1.7) with only iron equipment was a tremendous experience, as the gear I was able to scrape together as I progressed was a unique progression as much as the bosses I killed to acquire it. If I had jumped in later in my modded play, my equipment likely would have made the experience less gratifying, but fitting it into a Vanilla progression made for the perfect stepping stone into larger projects.

I'm glad the mod isn't dead, although I doubt I'll be back any time soon. Hopefully the current dev team can bring it to greatness for others to get lost inside, as I once did.

I never really found the bosses the fun part of Twilight Forest anyway. Except for the Hydra and the Naga. The Hydra's a complete pain because hits don't always register but the new head mechanic I find actually fun. It gets hectic towards the end dodging it. And the Naga's fun to try and chase around or wait for it to come to you, and a properly timed hit will send it off in another direction.

I always liked trying to play Twilight Forest as a magic mod, which meant I was only allowed to use magical gear (or spells), somewhat like Dire, but I never managed to play a mod pack with both Twilight Forest and Ars Magicka, which I think would have been tremendous fun. (I know Dire's 1.5 pack had both, but I got side tracked building stupidly complicated rail lines and dying to Biomes o' Plenty.)

The argument I have is that a) none of them are even semi-unique, b) making you do them in a certain order is both contrived and immersion-breaking, c) the fights themselves are boring and aggravating.

That and the mini-ghast spawners from the tower were STUPIDLY OP for ghast tear grinders.

Honestly, I know what I would like to do for a mod for minecraft, I just don't know how to DO it, because it would involve tearing into the tool use mechanics, and that can get... awkward.

At least in Twilight Forest doing them in order has some reason behind it. Naga scale gets you into the Lich's Tower, Lich's Scepter gets you past the mosquito's.

Honestly, Shneekeycraft THE MOD, both terrifies and interests me.
