In making several iron tanks, I think one should have a plentiful source if fuel, not for main power but incase I run out. Is hydrogen a viable option? What about methane? My goal is to have a way to use energy to make some as a backup.

Forget about hydrogen, it has been nerved to oblivion is now only useful to get deuterium imho. Methane can still be viable since you get at least some surplus of energy out of it but not nearly as much as you used to. If you want backup fuel why not go with plain old fuel? :D

What I meant was I need something that is renewable and be constantly producing it. Thanks for the info on hydrogen, I'll start my methane production plant.

If Hydrogen is a by-product of your process, why wouldn't you burn it? It's above breakeven, right?

In MindCrack v8 methane contains 6000 fuelunits, hydrogen 4000 fuelunits. In later versions of GregTech this will be nerfed to 3000 methane/2000 hydrogen.

In a fully heated 36HP boiler 3000 fuelunits will net ~27.3k MJ. Not worth the hassle. Better burn that methane for 45k EU in a Gas Turbine.

Thanks for the info! Does anybody know if I can break even on methane production, much less profit? I'd like to look into alternative power methods.

Edit: hmmm. Maybe I could supplement centrifuged methane from food like apples? Just a thought.

Well almost all of the centrifuge recipes for methane require 25k EU and 250 sec to process and methane nets you 45k EU in a gas turbine. So it is just a matter of scale ;)

once I get bee production up, I plan on exploiting using the glistening melon recipe from beekeeping then centrifuge that for gold and methane. hoping I can scale it enough to be practical, or at least a decent byproduct.

for a return on investment, one of the best (percentage wise) is ic2 biofuel cells. it takes 820eu to produce and burns for 6000eu. make sure to use the gt generator though so you get your empty cell back.

Damn that nerfbat! I was looking forward to powering my base off of hydrogen fusion boilers... ._.
