World, not level

Sounds like corrupted world file. IIRC if it is certain chunks you can remove them with MCEdit, but probably no way to fix

all it did was keep the generated chunks from my last world and filled in around it
not great, but workable!

This may be a good time to note, all people playing modded minecraft should have daily backups for servers and hourly backups for single player games. This can be automated using mods that let you backup your world files. In total I've probably lost 20-30 minutes of gameplay in 2 years and thats including running a server.
