I have no idea what i pushed to make these red lines show up. They are not beacons, and they occur every so often almost as if in a grid. I was trying to get my mini map to come up, which i never did... lol but i did get these! Any help is much appreciated. Direwolf 20 1.6.4

Try f9. It sounds like that's the thing you brought up. If so, pressing it once will add some green lines, and pressing it again will make both disappear. Hope that helps

They are really really handy IMO. Specially for building/planning for chunkloading. Also for just aiming up stuff as the green grid makes it easy to count blocks.

If you are not aware of it already you can also press F7 to get an overlay showing areas where monsters can spawn. Red X is where light levels are always low enough for monsters to spawn, yellow are where they will spawn once it gets night.

This. They're insanely useful tools. Especially the f7 function, for making sure that creeper can't spawn near your most delicate storage areas. :P

Magnum torches are your friend :D

Oooh yes, definitely :P But if you only have to light a tiny little room, you don't always want to hunt for the ghast tears to make them. :P

But I made a huge canopy tree forest in the overworld on a 1.6.4 server, and those torches were the only thing that made visitors not fill my lovely forest with creeper holes. :P

You coulldddd make a mfr spawner and autospawn ghasts. Or if you wanted to make a tier five soul shard spawner of them :p

Rather unfair of me to point this out at this point in the discussion as there's no way you could have known, but I was playing on a home-made modpack that had neither of those mods. :P My only technique was to hang out in Twilight Forest lich towers and kill the mini ghasts that spawned there. Not bad really, never took long to get a bunch of them, but I was still sparing with my torches. :P

Aren't there carmanite ghastling spawners in those? You could tear down (or quarry out, if you have buildcraft) the area around the spawner and make a makeshift farm for them.
