tl;dr, I want to convince my friend (a co-admin) to stop spawning in items in my FTB server. I don't want to ban, de-op or otherwise use plugins to prevent him from doing this.

I own a FTB server, which has 20-25 regular players. My friend who helped me start and run the server plays like anyone else, but is always spawning in items (nothing extreme, but things that would otherwise take all of the effort out of the game: diamonds, 64k Storage disks, Crafting CPUs, Wires / Cables) I am the only person on the server that knows this, as I am the only other person with OP and access to the console. Once he has basically taken out all of the grind of the game, he then builds a very huge and complex base, spawning in more items when necessary.

Now, normally I wouldn't really care, but we recently had a map-reset, and I know that he will start spawning in items getting to late-game within days. I want to show him that FTB is meant to be a fun journey, and you don't need to spawn in items to have enjoyment.

He's not a child, I'm not going to treat him like a child. Banning him, de-opping him or otherwise forcefully limiting his powers isn't something I want to do; I want to convince him that he doesn't have to spawn in items.

If there are any suggestions from you guys that could help me with this task? I know I'm kinda asking much and I'm sorry for that, but I've thought through this for over a day, and I've not really come up with much.

Allow him to spawn items in *for communal use only*, plus set up a communal quarry for the workshop. That way, he can always fall back to the communal workshop if tech advancement is too "boring" for him, and just build wacky machines using the already available equipment.

Plus, the workshop is completely optional, so other server members can use it at their discretion, and not feel the server is "too easy"

That is a good idea, though that wouldn't stop the issue with spawning in more difficult items to gather, for example; Diamonds, Ender Lilies, Spawners, etc.

He literally hates mining legitimately with a passion, though I know he can easily do it.

Talk to him about it. By just trying to work around him, you're already treating him like a child.

I'm not trying to work around my problem with him, I'm trying to find a way to talk to him that he would stop spawning in items himself, without forceful intervention, like removing OP.

Try talking to him about quarries, hammers, the power tool, the laser drill and all the various other tools that modded minecraft provides that substantially reduce or eliminate the need to mine for resources. It's hard to be part of a survival community if you don't understand why people might make lots of 1k drives or barrels or all the other various early/middle game solutions to stuff. What fun is there in making a villager smeltery if you can just spawn in blocks of emerald? What fun is there in a carefully constructed piston trap if you can just teleport your friends into lava?

Then tell him that. You want him to stop spawning in items and play the game. You can try and get fancy, but that's the crux of the matter.

How about removing all OPs on the server (not just him) and saying you want to try that out? Not sure why you would need to have permanent OP users, on our server it's only used for troubleshooting, e.g. running OPIS. I'm the admin and I've only been OP once or twice over the past year or so.

If it is fun for him to spawn items rather than going through the grind...then I don't really think there is much you are going to be able to say to him that will change his mind.

However, if this is your server, and spawning items isn't allowed...and you want to treat him like an adult...de-oping him is what you would do to any other op that abused his powers isn't it?...

If he does it in a way the other players don't even realize it, why do you want him to force him to play the game how you want?

He's not a child, I'm not going to treat him like a child.

Then don't act like a child and let him play the game how he wants, not how you want.

Let him set up a quarry then tell him to just use that to get resources. Also give him a Looting III Iron Sword. With bat morph and that sword, he should get ender pearls.

I have a strict no-op policy on my server, not even myself, as I had the same problem before. Someone who was supposed to be a supervising op had a matter fabricator within 2 hours of starting the map (with gregtech installed mind) so I drew the line.

If I need op for Opis or something similar, I op myself using RCON from my smartphone (or there windows apps around too), do what I need to do, then de-op myself right away.

Here's what you do.

De-OP him. And don't even say anything.

If he asks say you got rid of all ops.

If he has a problem with that and leaves the server. Ohhh well

If he makes it an issue and causes a rift in your friendship. Time to get better friends.

Trying to teach him to not use a crutch while giving him that very crutch because its not fair to everyone else is treating him like a child.

Or

Tell him that everyone else can see him spawn shit in cause it prints in chat. And either go with its unfair to everyone else, or (the favorite) people see it and think he is a chump path.

are you getting donations for this server? are you planning on it? if the answer to either of those is yes, you need to stiffen your spine real quick.

want to treat him like a man? somebody suggested to talk to him, and tell him exactly what you're telling us now. otherwise you're trying to convince him, which is a waste of time, because in his eyes you'll probably be wrong.

something simple like:
"hey man, i know you've been spawning in items. i need to ask you to stop because it harms the integrity of our server. blah blah blah"

put him on notice, basically. yeah bro, i know what you're doing. keep it up and i'll take stronger action. be a man, stand up for your server, tell him that his actions as an OP are inappropriate. if he wants to play in creative mode, he should play SSP.

Then don't act like a child and let him play the game how he wants, not how you want.
it doesn't matter how he wants to play. they built a server, they set rules for people to play by, and they both should be abiding by them as well. re-read my last sentence in the previous paragraph regarding SSP. thx.

so you're suggesting to be shady and tell half truths and/or lie? that's not something a man would do.

There's only 2 options you have.

1) Let him continue to spawn in items, but don't have him share in any way shape or forum.

2) Stop looking for a passive aggressive way and tell him No More or he WILL get de-opped.

You say you won't treat him like a child, so don't and deal with things in a non btch way.
