hi all some help would be awesome!

So trying to launch ether Direwolf20 1.10 or FTB infinity lite and it seems to start up fine but then hangs when its loading some of the mods closer to the end. could this be due to lack of memory? i do have 4gb allocated to it and no error in the log ..... it just hangs there.

thanks guys and gals!

In task manager does it show Java using 4 gigs of ram when it gets stuck and if it does allocate more. How much ram do you have?

Dam it... Alright thanks for that guys! Uv been a big help.

If you've only got 4GB then allocating 4GB to Java/Mnecraft is allowing the OS to be overwritten. I'd say the minimum ram to run modded MC is at least 6GB, perhaps more on a system using integrated graphics which uses part of system ram as well. This leaves resources for the computer to function as well as the game to be played.

4GB used to be enough for pretty big modpacks (around 100 mods) on Minecraft 1.7.10. I remember allocating just 2GB to my smaller modpacks without causing problems.

4GB should be enough for a modpack like DW20's (I'm assuming it still has around 150 mods or less?) to at least start.
Starting to hang after playing an hour or two straight would be acceptable for only 4GB, but on startup... not so much.

Even Feed the Beast is recommending 4GB for any of their 1.10 packs, above and beyond system requirements, that is. Also, many of the new mods coming out, including Forge, are requiring Java 1.8, which is recommended by Mojang.

Scottly, why would that pack need more than 4GB to start up?

Sounds to me like it contains some terribly inefficient mods. Which? I guess you can only find out by trial and error. :)

The 1.10 modpack require 6gb allocated to run effectively problem is he has 4gb total system ram he has to upgrade the amount of ram his system has. Although the 1.7 packs can play with as little as 2gb of ram

Nobody seems to want to remember that the computer has to be able to function underneath whichever application is being run, and in MC's case that is 3 layers...

1). OS and hardware - Includes the OS memory requirement plus, if using Integrated Graphics, reserved memory for the video buffer(s). GPU cards generally provide their own buffer ram.

2). Java. - Java requires it's own internal memory to reside in, as well as room for various buffers.

3). Memory for whatever packs are loaded. In addition, Texture packs require more ram as well.

According to the Twitter messages I follow from the Forge developers, unless something drastic happens the 1.10 version of Forge will be the last that will run with anything older than Java 1.8. Apparently many no-longer-supported features from older versions have to be circumvented and limiting future development to using only Java 1.8+ will simplify things.

The switch to the model system for Minecraft 1.8 and up has meant a trade off of increased performance but more RAM usage (for the models), pretty much all the latest packs struggle to start with less than 4GB available. Bear in mind that this is with what are currently fairly small packs, once packs start increasing in size as more mods become available the memory requirements will be significantly higher than what you are used to.

Thanks for the clarification. That makes total sense. :)
And of course cooking your OS is never a good idea.
