The Smeltery Drain fromTinkers's Construct is said to also work as input in "Materials and me". How does one use it as input, if possible?

Yup, the drain acts as both an input and output, on the same side, outside the smeltery. If you want to input, just fluiduct into it, as Henry said.

So i necessarily need to use some kind of duct. Also it doesen't have to be placed backwards, right?

Nope

Essentially the smeltery is one fucking giant tank that can double ores and store multiple liquids
