So yesterday I started a new world.

Basically i'd got a few versions behind the times with infinity (the popup gets annoying) and I finally got round to updating to the new version and adding my customary extra mods.

This also gave me an opportunity to put back in some cool sounding mods that I ditched when I first start messing about with infinity.

RFtools and draconic evolution specifically were among the things I took out before I knew what they did (I try and keep the modlist down due to my substandard PC).

Anyhow, extras aside I realised within half an hour that my "getting started" thing is the same as it was before and very little has changed since unleashed...

Crafting table, furnace, double chest.
TiCo tool crafting bits,
Gather stuffs for grout and a smeltery,
Iron then gold chests
JABBA barrels for cobble and dirt.
Kill a couple of creepers for gunpowder and make a blast furnace.

A couple of hours and I already have steel, a farm and a decent amount of storage.

I'm starting to think this is almost too easy

1. Standard UHC first day (Wood, 20 cobble to make stone tools and furnace, grab some food)
2. Go caving, grab various bits and bobs, set up in an easily accessible cave.
3. Stirling generator, SAG mill, Alloy smelter.
4. Gather more stuff, upgrade power supply, make a compass and go meteorite hunting
5. Start AE, cos ain't nobody got time for organising chests.
6. Start messing around with magic n stuff

make flint pickaxe, try and get enough iron for a file, hammer and then iron pick. spend hours getting enough copper and tin to make the stacks of bronze needed to make the steam boiler, the forge hammer and compressor. take a deep breath and get to work on the bronze blast furnace so i can get proper power going.. yeah after that it isnt really a start anymore but then work towards the industrial grinder and industrial blast furnace powered usually by windmills and watermills since there is no way in hell i can make any solar panels for ages. But that is the first.. few days to a week depending on luck on getting the copper yeah sounds about right

Step 1: Find exposed stone.
Step 2: Play Creeper Tag.
Step 3: Skip wooden tools.

After the first three, I get nine more cobble for a pair of furnaces. (Tinker's Slabs) Then it's a rush to the Smeltery. After that I get a pulverizer. Then I don't worry about things.

Last my startup routine was used for real was 8 months ago, so rather suspect I need to completely revolutionise it next time with all the mod changes that have happened in that time...

My startup is mostly vanilla with an emphasis on a smeltery. I usually dig in for the first night after a day of woodcutting, then mine down to Y-12 and look around. Usually, I'll hit a cave system and explore until I realize how I'll equipped I am, then head back to the surface. I get distracted quite easily, so until I have a Bibliocraft Clipboard, I usually lack real direction - explore, harvest, mine, chop, wander until I see something I must build around, then settle down for real.

Usually that starter cave will be home till midgame, because that's where all my stuff is and I'm too damn lazy to move it. Once I have enough infrastructure, I'll begin construction on a proper base of operations at a previously scouted locale.

Rush Tinkers on first day.
Rush Smeltery.
Rush Lava.
If not go to nether.
Make block breaker for obsidian.
Spend all day mining.
Double ores over and over.
Never leave a cave.
Grow trees through a hole or about a 5 block radius from said cave.
Make bed once having decent armor.

Steal every natura berry bush in sight.
Make a juicer.

Mine all day and drink juice for the rest of my Minecraft life.

3 copper and a tin makes bronze with no need to smelt it.

mine is find a fun modpack
throw in a bunch of mods I never used/want to use more that also change the early game
remove a bunch of mods I already used and find boring
play the game with a total new thing to do at the start of the game then since the last time I played

but still most of the time it becomes punch wood-> get a farm-> get grind stone-> double ores->do stuff

My startup routine:

(0) Cheat in an Angel Ring and look for a place where you want to build. On finding one, throw the Angel Ring away.
(1) Cut down a single tree. Make a wooden axe and a crafting table. Cut down a second tree. Make a wooden pick. Mine a few stone blocks. Make stone tools.
(2) Make a stone sword and cut down some sheep, if present, or other livestock if not. Make a bed. Cut out a small room in the side of a hill. Near water if possible. Make a furnace and cook the meat from the sheep.
(3) Likely I have some coal at this point. Make torches.
(4) Make a two-block wide (!) stairway to y-level 10 (make cobble stairs as soon as feasible, jumping is annoying). On finding iron, make an iron pick but only use it on blocks that require it. Mine some more.
(5) While mining and exploring, look out for bats. Kill one at the earliest opportunity (I have Morph installed).
(7) Make a TiC smeltery as big as nearby clay resources permit, preferably with a 3x3x4 inner space.
(6) Mine enough redstone for a basic machine setup. Make four survivalist generators, one of the available early power storage items and one processing machine of your preference.
(7) On finding a lava pool, make an Igneous Extruder. Use it to make obsidian. Make an alumite pick and build a Nether portal.
(8) Mine Nether ores. As much as you can and as long as your pick lasts. Die at least once to one of those giant spider queens or its children ;)

From there on, things vary depending on what I want to do in this world and which mods I have installed. The first order of business is usually a power system, something like a quarry (unless I have Ex Nihilo installed, then it's an automated resource extracting facility) and addressing the shortage of ender pearls since anything interesting appears to require them these days. Up to that point, I subsist on cooked chicken, beef or lamb.

This!

EDIT: I'll add to my list, first order somewhere between automation and tools is getting materials to make a horn of the wild.

Because grass that's why

I used to do this, but now I find it so much easier to just make a shaft with Stone Ladders from Tinkers.

Depending on the mods in the pack, obviously.

I run the world looking for a place to live, gathering loot along the way.
Tinkers' smeltery for early ore doubling.
Food Farm.
Super early Botania setup aka daybloom mana farm.
Mining, mining, mining, Achievement Get DIAMONDS!!!
Ender IO or TE for starting tech, preferably Ender IO.
After that is whatever I feel like doing.

Mining straight down is still somewhat hazardous, isn't it?
just make sure you always stand on at least one block and you are safe. Then it might even be safer then digging in a stair pattern because lava doesn't flow to you.

I have Pam's Harvestcraft installed. If your inventory got cluttered up by the ton of crap that drops when you break grass (you can exhaust a gold chest with the different types of seeds and saplings added by that mod) as often as it did for me, you'd hold off on the horn and just avoid touching the grass ;) Almost as bad as PneumaticCraft's plants spawning within your tree farm and taking up the place of saplings because you're using a sprinkler (even one without bonemeal) to increase growth speed.

It would be nice to have a version of the horn that breaks all grass and destroys everything that drops except for Botania flowers. I would build that in a moment.

I mine as many blocks straight down as I can while standing on the side of the shaft. The I line it with ladders as I climb down (if it is safe). I then dig in a small alcove that lines up with what is going to become the tunnel for that specific Y-level. I then step into this alcove and then dig straight down as far as I can again. Repeat that until I reach bedrock.
