So, I was fooling around in NEI today to learn more about Mariculture and found something troubling: The obsidian recipe.

See, I'm using the Tic Tweaks mod and usually you must first collect steel before obsidian. And steel requires bronze and so on. Problem is, this recipe means that one can skip bronze and steel and head straight to alumite. So here I am now asking if there's any way to remove mariculture vat recipes without removing the vat.

Also on a side note, does anyone know if TiCon has a similar recipe? I vaguely remember something like it and want to be sure. Thank you.

You could always use that MineTweaker to disable the recipe I believe. The only TiC related thing I know of that allows you to make obsidian is Steelwork's ability to pour lava and water into faucets in equal amounts, but it makes liquid obsidian so no idea if you consider that breaking anything. That and if it is enabled, you could always change the configs to disable it.

There's no support for vat recipes in minetweaker. (That's a plugin i wanna work on in 1.7 though).
For now your best bet is just to make the vat cost something more with minetweaker, say bronze, or invar or steel ingots instead.
Remember the igneous extruder can make obsidian just as easy, but of course it's a little more expensive.

It's unlikely you can reach the bedrock and a lava lake without stumbling upon every pieces needed for an igneous extruder. Or a metalformer from IC2 with enough tin for the cells. Steel is also pretty much on par with alumite afaict. There is no major gain.

I don't see the vat as a so much OP solution to the obisidan problem. I might take a look, might be useful tough...

It's also note worthy to say that I'd favor a cheap forge tool to a high tech tier 1 tool from tinker construct. I'm rushing the forge station so bad I usualy end up using a stone lumber axe because I have nothing else to build it with. Assuming you had enough iron to build a forge first, you're garanteed to have found the 4 tin ore, the 3 redstone dust and the single gold ore needed to build an igneous extruder.

Thank you Joshie, I will graciously wait for the day you release said plug-in.

I guess the quick way would be to minetweaker some steel requirement for the Vat and change the TE config to require steel.
(like the vat has an obsidian component or similar)

Oh, I'm not using TE. I'm using IC2, Railcraft, Steve's Carts and much more as central mods.

Also, I can't change the recipe as the tech tree winds so many mods together the removal of the Vat would change many recipes already in my pack.

You could make the vat require obsidian to craft.
