So get this:

(a) Planks
1 wood = 2 planks
2 planks = 3 items per wood.

(b) Charcoal
2 wood = 4 dust (2 grind = 0.25 charcoal?)
4 dust = 1 charcoal (smelt)
1 charcoal = 8 items - 1 smelt = (7/2) - 0.25 = 3.25 items per wood.

(c) Saw'd Wood
1 wood = 4 planks - saw
1 saw = 2 sticks, 3 stone rods, 1 flint
3 stone rods = 1.5 smelts
saw lasts (50?) uses. Double check.

2 sticks = 1/4 wood (since 4 planks = 8 sticks)
1 flint = 3 gravel
4 planks = 6 items - ((1.5/50[saw durability]) - 0.25[sticks]) =~ 5.75 items per wood. Efficiency increases as you use better materials, notwithstanding the smelting costs of the iron, etc.

So, if you are willing to trade some raw materials (wood, flint/iron) you can obtain near double efficiency by using saw'd planks.

Factoring efficiency due to usage of better Metallurgy machines not factor'd in, since it would be about even gains across all three examples.

It would seem that the gains by using charcoal are near negligible, aside from energy density/infinite torches. Though once you hit the nether, coal isn't really much of an issue.

The most efficiency way, it seems, is to saw wood. Gravel is pretty easy to come by, wood from the same source you are providing fuel, and stone from the copious amount of cobble you will mine.

It just means a lot more manual stuff.

Just having some math moments.
