If I'm on a friends server and I claim chunks so that no one else can destroy my house, how do I know if it's working? Since I can just disable claiming chunks client side, are the other players able to do the same thing and just come in and steal my stuff? Thanks!

So this morning I decide to go to my promisland base, where I have my Mass fab + Ultimate Hybrid, and when I get there there is a giant ring of fire around my base, but nowhere else. Wondering if this has happened to anyone else, -the fire seems to only be where there was grass. Here is a pic:
