Do they produce a node every time? How far apart should they be planted? Would planting at max height or bedrock help?

There's the sulfur torch and an upgrade to aluminum torch. Sulfur seems to be the same as a normal torch, just getting 8 for 1 sulfur & 1 stick. But I can't see a difference with the aluminum torch, which uses a sulfur torch and aluminum. Anyone know anything about them?
