    Removing everything from my hotbar solved the problem. This is less than obvious unless maybe I am an idiot. Thanks for the help!

    So I finally manage to find stuff to make steel. Make a steel block and a Tinkers' steel pick. Place block and right click and nothing. Realize maybe pick should not be a tinkers' pick. Off to try to find more lava. Finally make steel pick and right click on block. Again nothing. Noticed there...
