If you know the contents, you can do a JEI search, then use T to search for it within inventories nearby. The Storage Scanner is better if available, but finding things early game or in a friend's base can be made much easier.

I'm partial to using Chisel and Bits. You can hide glowstone bits, or even lava, inside of blocks to make them glow. You can configure the mod to allow light from a single bit, but usually it takes a full layer (16x16, or 256 worth) to emit light.

Not exactly simple, but you might be able to build a small system with a vacuum Hopper and and Ender Chest, then place it occasionally (using the second Builder, and picking it up again after a delay with likely a third). I've not mocked anything up, so I'm not sure how it would actually help...
