Have you tried TE3 the glacial precipitator because that can make ice. You could also use a silk touch pick and mine ice from a frozen biome.

Go to the options and tick "reopen launcher when minecraft exits" this will cause the launcher to open after a crash. You should be able to use the console to post your log.

Are you running 32 bit java? If so then you should be using 64 bit because it will not allow you to allocate more than 1 - 1.5gb of ram. I will assume that you have a 64 bit os because 16gb of ram would be utterly pointless with a 32 bit os.
