I like starting off with some Hydrogenas to get some mana before I go Endoflame. Two sets will passively get enough mana while I'm farming wood and ores, to make the Band of Mana, and the Band of Aura and maybe even the Sojourner's Sash (an absolute MUST have for me).

What irks me? The fact that Andesite, Granite, and Diorite do not oredic with cobble. I find these blocks ugly as sin, and would rather put them to use in recipes where cobble is used. Hell, someone could even make a mod that uses these three cruddy blocks to make different coloured furnaces...
