    Maybe DreamMaster disabled the tanks, but they are hard to see in NEI. Usually, they are 4 obsidian in the corners and 5 glass panes in a cross ... OPO PPP OPO I don't think the BC tanks would work but you could try, I suppose, just in case.

    Are the open blocks tanks/grates available to you yet? You can store xp with them.

    The gt gas turbines were definitely working with ic2 biogas (from the ic2 fermenter) before the gt pollution update. http://imgur.com/a/U4iRu In the pic, there's a turbo gas turbine on the left and on the right you can see two (of four) basics. They're both using the biogas in the tank above...

    Why cant I put items into my smeltery?

    I seem to remember having a problem trying to put the items in through the front of the controller. I've always since placed the controller so that I could input from the side.

    There's the cellars addon to TFC - won't save food indefinitely but slows down decay a lot.

    Wasn't the buff to the gt boilers partly to offset the fact that high-pressure boilers could no longer be automated?

    For my early game, I had a forestry worktable loaded with flint and sticks for axes :) 10 4x4 spruces generally filled a max charcoal pit needing approx 6/7 axes and a few extra to clear the pit. Cheap 'n' easy.

    Re the automation, if you haven't already tried conveyors and pumps attached to machines, I'd suggest looking at them. You can use them to extract items/liquids to/from chests/tanks.     I find tunneling in the nether in one direction under the lava often gets me redstone (and sulfur) and it's much quicker than the overworld.

    FTB Retro SSP No Sound

    Do you mean the 1.2.5 version? If so, that seems to happen sporadically. Only thing I found that solved it was to shut down all java processes (game, launcher, curse) and reload. I double-checked task manager (I'm on windows) to make sure everything was really closed.

    Forgot to mention, for some ores (eg 'pure' iron, 'pure' gold) you'll get more by smelting the two crushed (10 nuggets each) and not hammer it first. It's worth checking through each possible process every time, including converting ores into Thaumcraft clusters once you've gotten that far down...

    Macerating the ore gives two crushed, so definitely better to macerate -> hammer -> smelt -> 2 ingots, than just smelt -> one ingot.

    I used a vanilla cactus farm to fuel my fermenter setup, using liquid heat generators to power them. The nice thing was how easy it was to scale up - both by adding new layers to the farm and/or adding an extra fermenter/generator. I'm still using it for producing plastics.

    Slowpoke specifically mentioned not being able to generate enough emc in the early game. Even for example the amount of boneneal you need to grow trees. In 1.2.5, you only needed one piece to grow anything to full. As I said though, I'm no expert, was just passing on what the original map...

    You can also put the machines directly next to the boilers, without the need for pipes. But as Marc said, using a tank buffer is useful, especially for the alloy smelter.
