In my experience, steel works fine for most everything. Theres higher end materials if you need it to mine a bit quicker. Cobalt is good for tool heads, manyulyn for weapons and ardite for tool rods. Paper and/or thaumium for extra modifiers. So, cobalt head, ardite rod, everything else paper...

It definitely helps performance issues, worth the occasional flickering texture.

Quick update: Set up a Witchery circle for the first time. Im loving this mod. Built a place for Magneticraft which I only recently added. Cant wait to try it.

Optifine, fewer mods (BoP is really hard on my system) and disabling certain background tasks.

Transfer nodes have their own internal storage slot, which helps in these situations. Or just use a buffer like the others suggested.
