Just as a point of information: You can copy the item mapping database from one of the world level.dat files to the other one. In fact, you could copy the level.dat file over, and then fix the seed and spawn location data.

Don't think of it as switching. Think of it as adding. I now have a 147-based slidecraft, a 1710-based Reika's tech and magic, a Terraria-based modded minecraft with event mobs, nasty special mobs, a regional difficulty that goes into hard mode, and lots of tech including laser rifles, etc...
