    I think the idea is to help punish shenanigans such as killing yourself to reset the food journal. The other option is to lock it into hardcore mode. ;) Edit: Forgot the original suggestion's wording, which obviated a concern now deleted.

    I haven't tried it in 1.1.5 yet, but in 1.1.4 fruit trees responded instantly to bone meal. Break the fruit manually, chop the tree, and replant for a good source of food. Juicable and pie-able fruit being the best, of course.

    Anesos seems not to be having any trouble with a surface base in his LP. It just takes some defensive base design and a bit of vigilance.

    I believe that endermen (and thus endercreepers) will teleport onto half slabs. Not sure about covers, but it seems likely. The only surface I know of that they won't target for teleportation is the lilypad. However, I am not sure that endercreepers will grief. Have you actively seen it happening?

    Or, for better usability you could make the floor of your base lily pads -- endermen won't teleport to them, so I doubt ender creepers will. It would take awhile to find enough, but you can craft them using nature essence from magical crops.
