OK, figured it out. Had to remove the LighLevelReloaded mod, startup without it. Shut down, then read the mod. Works with no issues now.

AA has the laser item/fluid/power system. A little confusing to use at first but once you get the hang of it it's quite cool.

Try Sprout. In scavenger mode a lot of blocks/items do not have crafting recipes. You have to explore and find NPCs to trade for the stuff you need. It's a very cool pack with the way it's put together.
