Energized Glowstone definitely. Even the Impulse Itemducts give off a bit of light. Blazing Pyrotheum does - but also tends to set things on fire.

Also, Storage Drawer upgrades aren't required to be made in sequence. You can slap an Emerald Upgrade on a drawer without making the previous tiers. (And you can stack the upgrades.)

Remember, you can angle the things. You're not limited to 90 degree positions.

I don't mind visible cables/ducts so much as the block-sized holes that they put in my floors. Although being able to snake a duct as part of my flooring made a certain bit of automation much more possible.
