Hardware - The Ultimate Server: What would it take, what would it do?

Check out a few YT videos as well, particularly the recent Ryzen/Latest Intel release comparisons... While Intel is still outperforming AMD in most single-core tests AMD is blowing the doors off Intel in most multi-core tests, at the afore mentioned lower costs. Also, for future compatibility...

Any word on when the DW 1.12.2 pack drops?

Tweet from Direwolf20 this morning: Direwolf20‏@Direwolf20 Hey guys if all goes well, the new pack should be on the twitch client later today. :). Just waiting on one mod update with a server side crash. 4:40 AM - 15 Nov 2017

Any word on when the DW 1.12.2 pack drops?

Like most 1.12 packs you will be better off with 4-6GB allocated to Java and MC (Plus OS requirements as well). Direwolf20 blew up his current LP base today, which was prerecorded, but said he would "if everything goes well" start playing the new pack "the next day" which is tomorrow. This is...

Hardware - The Ultimate Server: What would it take, what would it do?

I'm in a small metro area, and my cable provider has completely separate classes of service... Consumer and Business. If I ever set up a server I'll switch to business service since that will get me: 1) Symmetrical Upload/Download speed 2) Static IP address and DNS hosting for my domain...

Hardware - The Ultimate Server: What would it take, what would it do?

I'm with you as far as preferring owning my own server... I've worked with servers since I was a Unix Admin in the 80s through Linux, Novel, OS/2 and NT Lans in the 90s and 2000s. Having access to the hardware makes repairs and updates easier and not having to rely on someone of questionable...

Hardware - The Ultimate Server: What would it take, what would it do?

Yeah. Saving on the CPU and Motherboard allowed me to get more ram and/or a better video card and/or larger faster storage.

Hardware - The Ultimate Server: What would it take, what would it do?

Intel definitely performed better than these AMD chips, but people like me will give up a dozen FPS to save $100+ on the CPU and $50+ on the Motherboard.

Hardware - The Ultimate Server: What would it take, what would it do?

That series was replaced by Ryzen, which performs twice as well. I upgraded from an FX8350@4GHz (8 core) with a Ryzen 5 [email protected] (6 cores) and get better performance. I'll be upgrading to an 1800x and using the 1600 in a "new" system for the wife, thanks to Black Friday savings :D

Hardware - The Ultimate Server: What would it take, what would it do?

If you go with a M.2 nvme SSD, I'd recommend the Samsung 960 EVO (I've seen $117 for the 240GB model). It has about the fastest transfer speeds I've seen so far. It has a 5 year warranty :D

    How many hours?

I let the world generate the way it wants to, then search for my perfect camp for hours upon hours... Unless I spawn on a sandbar in the middle of deep ocean with no resources but sand :D

Throwing together a quick pack to introduce a newbie

Probably my eyesight... Andesite looks like regular stone and Granite looks like dirt. Also they're both useless for anything but building in a Vanilla context and need mods to be useful, at least to me :D

Throwing together a quick pack to introduce a newbie

I see... you're thinking more a multiple-zone spawn area. Also, I just realized the Vanilla mechanic just works for Vanilla blocks. Good enough for me to remove what I don't want, Granite and Andesite, but not for the customization you want.

Throwing together a quick pack to introduce a newbie

This can be done in the Vanilla Worldgen... You can set Highest/Lowest level found, cluster size and chance(s) for clusters to gen. It's under the same option where you would select "Biomes o' Plenty", if that's your jam. There are 4 screens of settings that control "Sea level", Village spawn...

Ask a simple question, get a simple answer

Remember, don't allocate the total amount of your installed ram to Minecraft... Your OS needs between 1 and 2 GB depending on the version and if you have "Integrated Graphics" then another 256 to 512MB chunk is lost as well. If you're running on a laptop with a total of 4GB installed then I...

Problem What PC specs I need?

4 cores is kind of standard these days, unless you're buying someone's used junk from ebay... Even the new phones are generally quad core :D My point is that more cores == more heat... When multiple cores exist on a single die the overall clock speed has to be reduced because of heat...

Problem What PC specs I need?

@Cptqrk is correct, memory is probably the biggest requirement change since 1.7.10, but in case anyone else out there wants more info, these are the traits I'd look for in newer systems: 1). Full 64-bit system. This includes the Hardware (CPU), the Operating System and Java. 32-bits isn't...
