This statement is a repost of a comment I made on the minecraft forums. I am reposting it here so I have an easy post to link to when I get asked questions on this subject.

'...or that Technic and the Yogscast is directly responsible for Thaumcraft being created.'

I Really want to hear Azanor's reaction to this

I must say that this is a very good and well thought-out reply to the whole conversation of the legitimacy of mod packs. I hope that, even if there is no actual "competition," when the FTB pack comes out that a lot of people will see what can truely happen when many modders come together to work on something for the community.

wow, until recently i never knew about this sort of stuff about the technic pack ect. I first saw it when yogscat started playing it (mainly duncan's tutorials) and thought it would be awesome to rent a server and plat tekkit, now I've learnt a bit about nods and might try other ways of playing with some of the awsome mods in tekkit.

When I read this post on the FTB thread in the minecraftforums my reaction was this:
Much respect to slowpoke for a very balanced and well thought out and detailed post regarding all the technic silliness.

I had already had the opinion that kakermix and the technic team weren't the nicest or most logical people out there. But after seeing the old thread on the IC2 forums - it heightened my disrespect for him and them. I had used the technic launcher at one point in 1.8.1 when I was still really new to minecraft, and the previous .minecraft I had that a friend of mine installed for me with all these great mods got all messed up. It was extremely convenient because I didn't even know how to install mods at that time. I didn't even know what winrar or 7-zip were.

Anyways, it was later I learned about the rift between the technic people and some of the mod authors. In 1.1 I decided to learn and configure the mods myself and did so, the same with 1.2.5. I didn't like all these other mods that technic wanted to add in just for the sake of more mods. Like millenaire, mo' creatures, balkons weapons etc. I also realized that the ad revenue from downloads and donations were the only thing to pay the mod authors for their work, so I donated and downloaded them all myself. There was only one problem - I wanted to try out playing on a server and playing with other people that also liked all these mods. I couldn't find just a modded server to join, so I hesitantly redownloaded the techniclauncher so I could check out what tekkit was all about. There were constant bugs. I got griefed by probably a 10-yr old on a tantrum. Every time I looked at the technic forums I wanted to puke. I eventually did find a tekkit server I liked to spend time on but the entire time I couldn't stand that it was tekkit, ironically.

And wow, just noticing how wall-of-text this post is becoming so I should sum it up. Basically, I love this FTB modpack idea mostly for the smp side of it. When all the mods are released I am still probably going to download them all myself for ssp in 1.3.2. But I like teaching others and learning from others about new interesting ways to make use of the mods, but to hell with tekkit.

So it's my wish that many of the current tekkit servers stop using that crap and switch to FTB.

Thanks Slowpoke for the succinct & balanced explanation. I've been following the abuses of the Technic pack folks (I've never used it as I was really put off by their arrogance & immaturity; it felt better to learn to install the mods myself), and it is great to see that at last the people who are responsible for these amazing FTB mods are grouping together to provide not only a great gaming experience for us players, but being proactive in protecting and promoting their hard work. Can't wait to experience this mod pack!

This thread crystallises the argument and sums it up precisely. It's been sorely needed for a long time now.

Really looking forward to the FTB modpack being released. My friend is terrible at installing mods, and I have to help him out quite often if he wants mods. Never wanted to direct him to technic, so it will be nice to have something that the mod authors support and I will be able to direct my friend to.

Thankyou for clarifying that little issue. I think (from my research) any mod pack that does not get permission from the authors is illegal. This is because even though the authors are using someone else work as a basis, they are still programming the mods themselves. In fact there is a 99 year (I think) copyright policy across every piece of material that someone makes from a simple child scribble to books, games and, of course, mods. The reason why you don't see packs (like technic/tekkit) taken down is because the "internet police" could not care about free expansions to games. They think that it is not a big issue because people are not making any money out of it. However all the modders want (from what I have gathered) is the recognition, which is what they deserve.

I think it's 50 years on intellectual properties. or 50 years after the person is deceased. I remember 50.

Pretty moving text there, Slowpoke, in the End I was kinda reading it with a "This is a new era we're entering in!" Voice Tone o_O if that makes sense. And you know, in Direwolf20's videos your microphone always has an echo-ish sound to it, and add that to the Voice Tone and it makes it really motivational.

I think you are correct in everything you just said. 50 years I had a nagging feeling about but I think the 99 year is for something else in law, and Slowpoke is leading the front of anti-copyright modpacks. As soon as the FTB modpack with launcher comes out I think people will start to leave technic/tekkit but we need to get the word out there. It is our job!!!!!!!!!!!!

lets just say when FTB launches and the yogscast stop doing tekkit(if they do stop) its going to be a slow painful death for technic

In the United States, if the work was not created by a corporation, the copyright persists for 70 years after the death of the author (so if I create a mod today and die 60 years from now, that mod would be protected by copyright for a total of 130 years). If the work was created by a corporation, the term is the lesser of 120 years after creation or 95 years after publication.

I guess it depends on where you are then; Because I definately remember a 50, either after creation or after death, that I don't remember. But I don't live in the United States so it could explain the difference between numbers.
