I'm on my brother's computer trying to get the FTB launcher to work for him, but to no avail. Everyone else in my family who plays Minecraft uses a Windows 7 computer that is 64-bit (I think), but my brother is on a slightly older computer using Windows XP, 32-bit. I've tried everything I can possibly think of to get this to work with FTB, including...

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the latest versions of Java and the JDK
  • Uninstalling Java 7 and installing Java 6
  • Deleting the ftblauncher folder from the appdata directory (the same place where .minecraft is kept)
  • Deleting all traces of Minecraft from the computer and putting it back on
  • Deleting all traces of FTB and putting it back on
  • Putting the FTB stuff in a root folder (C:\FTB) and launching from there
  • Restarting the computer
  • Deleting any unnecessary environment variables
  • Using the .jar launcher instead of the .exe
None of this has worked in getting FTB to get beyond the point of downloading mods and then just vanishing. And on a possibly related note, when trying to launch Minecraft normally (no mods at all), it will pop up with the 'Could not create the Java Virtual Machine' error.

I'm not sure what to do anymore and I know FTB keeps error logs, but I'm not sure where. So if anyone has any idea what to do next, I'm all ears.

Thanks.

I can't speak for XP anymore. It's been such a long time since I used it, but everyone seems to say the same thing, that downgrading from Java 7 to 6 just causes problems.

Have you tried allocating more ram? Is Java appropriate to the bit type that's running the OS?

I believe crash reports are kept here (assuming it's in the directory you put in your list): C:\FTB\FTBBETAA\minecraft\crash-reports

No folder called 'crash-reports' there, but I did find a 'launcherlog.txt' in the main folder. Here it is..

Also I'm certain the bit type is appropriate to the system (32-bit), but I don't know how to allocate more ram to Java/Minecraft/FTB without using a .bat script of some kind.

Edit - Holy cow! I got it to work! However the workaround itself is... rather odd. All I had to do was set the allocated RAM to 768 MB. Anything more and Minecraft refused to launch.

Damn you beat me to it!
Oh well, thank you for posting the fix anyway, sweetie!
