The vast majority of server performance comes down to factors like:
  • mod-pack
  • players' builds on the server
  • server hardware
  • Internet bandwidth
  • other processes running on the server
But, I'm just checking before I build a new server if there are any performance differences between the various Linux distros, such as:

  • Ubuntu (uses Debian as a core)
  • Debian (without Ubuntu)
  • SUSE
  • etc.
What's your opinion ?

The distro really shouldn't matter much, especially for performance. Use the one your most familiar/comfortable with. For me that mainly comes down to being more familiar with apt than yum, so I go with Debian on servers and Ubuntu for desktops.
