I've started on AM but ran into an early problem. I'm at the point I need neutral essence to craft spells, but the way direwolf does it in his tutorial isn't the same. I'm guessing the mod changed since blue chalk doesn't exist. Does anyone know of a decent tutorial that can get me on track to what I have to do to make essence for spell creation?

AM2 exp is based on the mana cost to effect done. So for offensive spells it how much damage it does to a valid target for the light spell its how many spaces are illuminated. So for good training spells (for pure grinding) touch light is a good one (set up a dark room set the light punch it out again and again and again only good for leveling up low levels) and once you can i would suggest "self storm": This is what i use to level up to 120 and higher on my past experience with AM2. Storm has a nice exp ratio per cast and its self cast cost is really low making it spamable. Some drawbacks is it does take time but you are training time is to be expected. It makes it rain (not always a drawback... *cough water guardian cough*. and lastly it will strike nearby hostel mobs with lightning witch will inflict you with infernal mobs effects as if you had shot them with a arrow (expect to randomly drop your spell book so always have a magnet on when useing this method)

Sorry, but this is entirely wrong. Are you maybe thinking of AM1 mechanics? The max level is 99, and exp depends on two things: components and cooldown. Most components give about 6 exp per cast. A few (magic damage and regeneration are two that are easy to get) give 12. It's been a while since I've used any of the silver components, so those might give more. Also, that level 4 augment on armor gives an exp boost. The number of squares lit or damage done is completely irrelevant.

A bit more about the cooldown: It's a little over three seconds, meaning you'll get full exp if you cast a spell that activates one component and then wait a few seconds before casting again. For spells with multiple components, it appears that each component individually increments the cooldown. For example, my projectile-> ice damage/lightning damage/magic damage gives about 24 exp on the first hit, but then I won't get full exp unless about 10 seconds pass before the next hit. It's been a while since I've tried multi-target spells, but when I did I remember getting diminishing returns for each target hit after the first, suggesting that the cooldown is incremented and the nerf applied in between each hit.

On another note, i upgraded my AM2 altar with emerald and nether blocks... sunstone will have to wait until i have that anti-lava pendant from botania. Looks like i was one effect to short from what my crafting altar delivered - I thought that witchwood planks give +3, not +2...

Flying is more important than fire immunity, though either one is a huge help. I like to use a wand focus of equal trade to collect those things. Even better if you've got a focus manipulator and energized node so that you can put the treasure upgrade on the wand focus.

The ars magica compendium is your friend. Most of the useful info is in the "structures" section. All you need is an obelisk, a bucket of essence, and a crystal wrench to connect it to the crafting altar. It's a good idea to put the pillars and chalk circle around the obelisk to improve its efficiency, and run the power through a mana battery to the altar to store the excess.

So I am level 15 for Ars magica 2 and have a pretty sizable area around my base, which is an ex-battle tower. I have not ever slept after the first time use the interdiction torches to keep mobs from getting in, yet not one moonstone has landed in the area.

Was going to try and show an image but didn't get it to work, but i have a pure node at top of tower and near a river and surrounded by ethereal blooms, what is going on? I really want to save the blocks for the Crystal thing, but I will use it if i have to.

Sorting Idea. I was just playing around with the storage mod and thought there might be a way to auto-sort things. Sure enough. Drawer Controller, Controller Slave, a Hopper, and a chest to act as a buffer. You could throw a ender chest up there instead. Items flow from the hopper into the controller and into the drawer "network". Then if you wanted you could even have a sorting golem connected between to controller slaves and the golems has access to all drawers connect to the system. How cool is that?

For some reason monotone only falls in the ocean biome so build a dirt platform in the ocean and slap it with a pasture seed then wait you should get a moonshine within two hours of afk on a good sized grass ocean

I have to admit, i have no clue what you want from me and the aer imbued fires. And even IF it would create desserts instead of desert, it would cost to much. Carrying on with other things...

I will never understand people playing minecraft on hardcore. It is all well and good for shorter games, but minecraft?

Also, the now working fury spell from the same quest: While it increases damage by quite a chunk (From 0,5 hearts to 3 hearts with my fist, it even increases my spelldamage by the same flat amount, maybe because its physical? ) the downsides make it... inefficent. Getting the mark/recall spell is nice though, and even only cause i don't have to use as many enderpearls then before.

Finally, i enchanted an magicbane with the osmotic enchanter. (sharpness 5, looting 3, unbreaking 3, vampirism 2) It now deals 14,125 hearts worth of damage.

Oh and btw: What is everyone's choice of midgame armor? Battlemage? Terrasteel? Fortress Armor? Maybe even the voidmage robes?!
It only takes one Aer Infused Fire to get an infinite cake farm going. Example: http://imgur.com/a/mt9g0

Infused fire (aside from perdito) can destroy your world, so be careful with it. Personally I think infused fire is ridiculous, near-useless, and far too dangerous for most people to use. I kindof wish it didn't exist.

also for the devs of the mod, it seems if a rats are crashing the server on version 1.3.0 .

Has occurred multiple times tonight with separate rats in many different locations including the twilight forest.

Seems to happen when being attacked by them will report if any other issues are found with them specifically

EDIT: Seems to happen when attacking it as well, it's a specially modified rat with cloaking/lightning/blindness. Sitting in my base and crashes the server upon loadin with any sort of combat to or from it, going to be removing this from my server for now.

Crash log is as follows:

Also as a question to everyone, opinion wise what do you think is the best thing to put on battle mage robes as far as the armour imbuement table?

Oh my, so many interesting things happening while im away ~

I've started on AM but ran into an early problem. I'm at the point I need neutral essence to craft spells, but the way direwolf does it in his tutorial isn't the same. I'm guessing the mod changed since blue chalk doesn't exist. Does anyone know of a decent tutorial that can get me on track to what I have to do to make essence for spell creation?

Besides the things void mentioned, it should be noted that the dark and light version are crafted with AM2 rituals, which need warding candle, which in turn need pig fat.

Btw, if you want infinite vinteum dust - and thus infinite neutral essence - just craft and calcinator and let it smelt things. You will get more vinteum dust then you will use in the obelisk! Especially if you use an mana focus in the calcinator.

Flying is more important than fire immunity, though either one is a huge help. I like to use a wand focus of equal trade to collect those things. Even better if you've got a focus manipulator and energized node so that you can put the treasure upgrade on the wand focus.

[...]

Thanks for clearing up AM2 exp.

I always forget that focus! Im to old school. Also, i will get flying not through the flügel tiara, but through AM2 spell.

Well then. That is funny. And dangerous. Dangerously funny ? Not that i will use that... i thought the cake artifacts were cheaty, but this... even though it is dangerous. Instead, i will use something far less dangerous. What do i mean? Why of course, tons of TNT !

Also as a question to everyone, opinion wise what do you think is the best thing to put on battle mage robes as far as the armour imbuement table?

Personally, i put soulbound on all of my stuff at first imbuement - im paranoid. Otherwise (like the helmet) i would put on mana regen.

On the second, i went ahead and put explosion resistance on. Why? Gravity Creepers... If you don't fear them (you should), take physical resist.

On the third (which i didn't get yet), i wouldn't take fire resist, thanks to botania fire resist pendant. Hmm... depending on what guardian i would fight, i would actually make three sets for each other resistance. OR i could go for blood magic. >_<

Finally, on the fourth, i would put freedom of movement on the shoes if i were on a server, or water walking if there were a lot oceans... wait no, scratch that. To many hungry nodes. However, in any case i wouldn't take falling damage protection, since i have slowfall too. On my leggings, dispelling, no questions asked. On the breastplate, either life saving for dungeoning, or extra exp for training. And on the helmet, hunger regen, obviously.

Random... not really, imho. Furious zombies are quite special, and i would get new ideas if i would research them as an thaumaturg. And you get access to some good armor. And lno aspect is "locked out". You can make them all from the get go in the research table.
Yeah I know they're technically not locked out, but before I knew about the aspects I always found myself stuck early on in the research because you need things like life spirit and motus to scan half of the stuff in the game, which are really hard to find through the thaumometer and if you don't just discover them in the research table it gets frustrating. Its one of those things that make it hard for newbs to Thaumcraft simply because the info is missing, obfuscation is bad game design IMHO.

View attachment 19874 Sorting Idea.
This is what I did on my most successful Hardcore world, only I used a bunch of JABBA barrels (and a junk chest for stuff that shouldn't be in barrels) instead of storage drawers. You dont really need a buffer or hopper, just an input chest that the golems will sort items from.

I had the golems pull out of an ender chest linked to various things like my farms and arcane bore, plus I had an ender pouch with me to dump my inventory into the sorting system. In the end I had to make multiple sorting golems simply because one golem couldn't keep up with my automated resources.

For some reason monotone only falls in the ocean biome so build a dirt platform in the ocean and slap it with a pasture seed then wait you should get a moonshine within two hours of afk on a good sized grass ocean
I'm not in ocean biome and moonstone meteors fall sometimes.

If I'm not wrong the highest chance of a moonstone meteor is at a full moon. Other nights one can fall too but the chances are lower. There's also a minimum level requirement of 10 by default to make them fall around AM2 players.

Has been hard without AE in a modpack, usually always use it, hate chests, etc, etc.
Storage Drawers, the Drawer Controller, Requisition Tome, comes very close to AE :D

Stuff that goes in the Ender Chest gets pulled out by a Golem and put into the Drawer Controller, which will place it in the Drawers.
Golem linked to the Requisition Tome and when requesting items, he pulls it out the Drawer Controller and drops into a item gate that is linked to a Magic Mirror and the items fall down on top of yourself :)

First of all, I love the idea of this pack. I prefer to play ssp however I use an older computer as a server as I like the day/night cycle and such from playing on a server. Are there any configs that can be changed or mods that can be removed to lessen the cpu impact without taking away from the idea of this pack? Took out infernal mobs and that helped a little but it still feels like I'm playing on a server with 40 people.

Do you have journeymap running? That tends to take up a lot of FPS on it's own, here's a list of things you can turn down or off in it to help:
